My first memories of Coke were from a Woolworth fountain service. For 5 cents I could buy a Coke on ice and if I asked the server nicely, she would add a splash of cherry. That drink along with a pack of 5 cent Tom's salted peanuts were so good that your tongue would slap the side of your head just to get your attention. In the late 1950's, my mama would send me on my bike to the local Kroger for a 6 pack of 6.5 oz Coke in the bottles for 29 cents. I would usually pick up a loaf of Colonial bread for 15 cents and head home with the groceries in one hand and steering the bike with the other.Rarely did my family drive through South Carolina to observe Jim Harrisons'work, but there were plenty of facismiles throughout Georgia,Tennesse, Alabama and Florida.I saw it all but never gave the paintings much thought up until now. I regret that I failed to pay attention to this Coke history which was displayed so prominently throughout the South along with Pepsi and Dr Pepper and dozen more soft drinks. I now have a renewed interest and appreciation for the product and its outdoor advertising.Jim Harrison and his art alng with explanations of the times will go a very long way in chronicoling the Coke explosion throughout our South in the 1950's and forward. This chronicle with over 50 drawings of Coke brings back such sweet memories in more ways than one. I truly appreciate Mr. Harrison's drawing abilities and the written word which so often accompanied his works Together they spun a story of the South and country living which was sweet to the touch and brings back such wonderful memories of a time gone by. Thanks to Mr. Harrison for keeping the dream alive in both word and art.
