Revised in April 2016 This book is like educational Sudoko for Poker Players. Perfect to brush up on the mental math of poker on the flight out to Las Vegas. The book starts by showing how to estimate your hand's value versus another. Then implied odds are worked on. Finally the idea of calculating your value versus and entire range of hands is taught. The book has hundreds of problems to practice on so that the mental math of poker becomes automatic and intuitive. Estimation techniques and shortcuts are taught so that you can do the right math at the table when you need it. The math is learned through repetition and this book has plenty of problems to practice on.

There are simply too many mathematical errors in the book for me to give this book a higher rating. At $45, this is just not worth it. It seems like Doug Hull rushed this book to completion without having an editor look over the book before publishing. There is some value in the book, don't get me wrong, but come on man....it's a book about math. There's a right answer and a wrong answer. We are the students and you are the teacher Mr. Hull. Do a better job!I would recommend Owen Gaine's book "Poker Math That Matters." There are some grammatical errors in that book, but no mathematical errors that I've noticed and is an easy read. Too legit to quit...@$25 This is your A #1 source on Poker math.
Let me say that I think this is a five star book. I've been studying it for about an hour every morning and I can feel the pieces coming together in my brain. I've always read about how important it is to know the pot odds vs your outs etc etc but never really bothered to learn. The few times I looked stuff up online it never seemed particularly easy to learn, or my level of math was too far behind what it was asking me to do. This book very helpfully explains the process of working out the odds, and then gives you numerous drills to get the process stuck in your head. Worth every penny. Much better than 'Essential Poker Math' by Alton Hardin in my opinion, although there is a new expanded edition of that book out that I haven't read. I say all this with one caveat however:There seem to be a number of errors in this book and for that I've subtracted a star. I thought about subtracting two. I have the revised edition and even in the main body of the text I found an error early on. To be clear, it's a given percentage that is around the wrong way...it says A7o vs 78s is 35%-65% when obviously the Ace-high is 65% to beat 78s. That is a minor error but in any math book that purports to be teaching you math, minor errors slow you down because you keep second-guessing yourself. Perhaps that aids the learning process in the long run but some of the errors in the answer key are just plain wrong, and I've wasted a good half an hour this morning putting a tricky hand into an equity calculator to make sure I was right and the answer key wasn't. That is simply not good enough. If anyone wishes to check then page 212 bottom right: villain's open-ended straight draw plus a flush draw does not have 15 outs on the turn (as the stated answer) if hero also holds two suited cards to the same flush draw (lower cards) and the 6s gives hero a straight-flush. The correct answer is 12 outs as PT4's equity calculator points out (the standard 15 outs for an open-ended straight draw plus a flush draw minus the two spades in hero's hand and the 6s that makes hero a straight flush). This is not the only error in the answer key, and because of these errors I can only give this book 4 stars which is disappointing because I think overall it's still probably the best book on learning poker math that a beginner/high school dropout/adult who's forgotten all their college math/etc can get their hands on.
Right from the start this book gives useful techniques for learn most of the major math need to improve your game.
Good read and does a good gob of how math works at the table.
Only 2 chapters in and the reading material on how to calculate is spot on....however, it seems that that math in the problems is incorrect on more than one occasionFor example: Equity on the Turn, Hand versus Hand first problemAd Kh vs. 9c 8c board is Kc 3c 2s 10h -- book shows 9c8c favored 80%....could be that its just under the wrong cards but is very confusing.
This a great book to help anyone who is semi-skilled at poker become a lot better at the tables but total beginners should approach it with caution. I'm halfway through and so far all the examples and exercises are great and provide good off the table study experience that should vastly improve players' intuition on the table. However a lot of the answers in the back of the book are wrong. I have a BSc in pure math and have played poker semi-pro for many years and can say that, for certain, there are a lot of errors in the answer keys. There are even cases where the book tells you the wrong formula for calculating if a bet is profitable or not. For this reason I would recommend learning the right way to do the math elsewhere and then using this book as practice. If you make sure to just do the exercises and don't listen to how the book tells you to do the math this is a great read.
Doug continues to produce poker material for the rest of us ( those who don't play poker on TV) in a practical systematic manner. The book is well thought out & planned and will drill each concept into even a middle aged mind like mine. Yes there are a few mistakes but I have read he is working on corrections and will update soon. It should be said these mistakes do nothing to take away or detract from the mathematical concepts that are presented in a logical well thought out manner. It teaches you the concepts then drills them so you can immediately apply them without much mental acuity in a timely manner when it counts, when the money is on the line.
Really, really love this book. It's exactly what I needed to refine my game. Not thrilled with the kindle version though. Seems to be missing the page #s for the answer key - making it difficult to check your work.
